In your role as an Attendant 2(two part role, you may be asked to perform either):
Part one role:
- Provide instructions on specimen collection.
- Instruct student (faculty/staff) to open test tube, hold the tube by the barcode, do NOT touch the swab or unscrew the cap.
- Student (faculty/staff) collects saliva from mouth for 10-15 seconds.
- Swab between the cheek and bottom gum lines and under tongue where saliva pools, do not hit teeth. (If the test touches the teeth the participant must start over)
- Two or more students (faculty/staff) can be done at once during this process, if they are able to effectively use physical distancing.
- While keeping the test tube upright, as not to spill the liquid, student (faculty/staff) unscrews the top, flips the top over and inserts swab into container, tightly closes the tube, and shakes the tube vigorously 10x to mix with stabilizing reagent.
- The liquid in the tube is VERY IMPORTANT. If the student (faculty/staff) spills the liquid, drops the swab or touches their teeth, they are to dispose of the failed test kit and return to Attendant 1 for a new test kit.
- If collection is successful, participant is instructed to move forward to the second attendant at this station.
Part two role:
- Student (faculty/staff) will provide their name and DOB to the attendant at the collection table.
- The Attendant collecting the samples will also confirm that the stabilizing reagents are in the test tube prior to the student (faculty/staff) leaving the testing site.
- Label the tube with student's name and date of birth. Do not cover barcode. If a label is not present, a blank label is available for you to fill in. This must be very legible.
- When 12 samples have been collected in the carrying container, Attendant 2 or a runner will take the container to the pooler. Collect a clean container and begin again.
The Attendant 2 volunteer role includes the above responsibilities and includes standing for the majority of the shift and while interacting with others in a close proximity (closer than 6 ft) for a short period of time (up to 5 minutes of less) on a continuous basis throughout the shift. You will likely come in contact with some bodily fluids (saliva).
