Volunteer: Snack Bag Program - East River Road Pediatric Hospitality Cart

The Pediatric Hospitality Cart at East River Road Clinic is a volunteer-supported program designed to provide healthy, nutritious snack bags to pediatric patients and their families during medical appointments. Serving the Departmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Unit, Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness Unit, and Pediatric Neurology Unit, the cart offers a simple but meaningful gesture of comfort for families navigating often lengthy and challenging visits.

Many families travel significant distances—often 30 miles or more—for care. Providing a ready-to-go snack bag helps ease that burden, ensuring children have access to nutritious food and offering caregivers one less thing to worry about during their visit.

This initiative builds on the success of the AC6 Pediatric Hospitality Cart at Strong Memorial Hospital, expanding that model of care and compassion to the East River Road location. With consistent volunteer support, the cart operates Monday through Friday for four hours each day, serving families year-round.

Community involvement is central to the program’s success. Volunteer groups and individuals are invited to sponsor a designated week by donating 500 prepared snack bags (a one-time commitment per week). Each snack bag costs approximately $1.41 to assemble. Sponsors are recognized with signage on the cart during their selected week, with opportunities to support multiple weeks for those interested in a greater level of involvement.

Through this collective effort, the Pediatric Hospitality Cart helps create a more supportive, compassionate healthcare experience—making a difference one snack bag at a time.

Volunteer: Become a Wishmaker on Campus for Make-A-Wish Rochester

Wishmakers on Campus is a customizable fundraising program that provides college campuses, clubs, teams, and more the opportunity to engage in philanthropy and service activities in partnership with Make-A-Wish. The program encourages community service, leadership, volunteerism, and teamwork. It helps build school spirit and creates partnerships outside of academics while providing students hands-on experience fundraising to help create life-changing wishes for kids fighting critical illnesses.

Through Wishmakers on Campus, college students rally together to plan and coordinate fundraising campaigns to help Make-A-Wish grant more wishes to local kids with critical illnesses.

Some ideas of ways you can get involved include:

Host a Dance Marathon - Charge an entrance fee or ask students to collect pledges from businesses to participate. Pick a time frame for the marathon - we suggest twelve hours. Have fun themes for each hour.Host a Bachelor(ette) Auction - Ask each dorm, sports team, or student group to have one representative volunteer to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Create programs with the major and hobbies of each person.Coordinate a Tournament - Post flyers. Invite student groups to participate. Ask restaurants to donate prizes. Charge admission and sell t-shirts.Have a Bowl-A-Thon- Have participants collect pledges based on how many pins they hope to knock down or charge a flat fee to participate. The student(s) who raises the most gets a prize. Host a Concert with a Local Band - Contact a popular local band and plan a concert. Hold it on campus or at a local bar that will donate the cover charge to Make-A-Wish. Plan a Party - Host a Halloween, end-of-semester, Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, or St. Patrick's Day party. Ask each student to make a $5 or $10 donation at the door. Host a Hot Dog Eating Contest - Charge participants a $10 entry fee or ask them to collect a minimum in pledges to participate. Set a time limit for the contest and ask local restaurants or grocery stores to donate the hot dogs and buns.
